(LS1-A) This letter set features a picture of Sensoji temple.A local legend has it that Sensoji temple has existed since the year 628, when fishermen from the area pulled an image of the Buddhist goddess of mercy -Kannon - out of the sea in their nets and enshrined it there. It is the oldest temple in Tokyo and probably the most famous and popular one as well. It has a street in front of it, which is lined with many small shops selling all sorts of things from junk to treasures, from replica samurai swords to Japanese traditional sweets. This temple is a "must-see" if you ever get the chance to visit Tokyo.

(LS1-G) Some of the pictures and poems are featured in this letter set.Hyakunin Isshu is an anthology of 100 tanka (31-syllable poem), each by a different poet (from 7th to 13th century) and compiled in the 13th century by Fujiwara Teika. In the Edo period these poems became the basis for a very popular card game called Uta karuta, which was played during New Year's.

Tanka(literally meaning "short poem") is a very compact but evocative verse form made up of 31 syllables in 5-7-5-7-7 line pattern. The history of tanka can be traced back to the 8th century when Manyoo shuu, the oldest collection of Japanese poetry, was compiled. Manyoo shuu has many tanka as well as choka ("long poem"), which has been taken over by tanka and disappeared. Themes of tanka range from nature, loves and losses to travel and a variety of other topics.
