"What is your Chinese Zodiac sign?"
This is a common question among Japanese people. I can tell you with almost
100% certainty that every single Japanese person knows what their Chinese
zodiac sign is. We have a cycle of 12 years, each of which is represented
by an animal. The 12 animals are mouse, cow, tiger, rabbit, dragon, snake, horse, sheep, monkey, rooster, dog, boar and the order can not be changed. If you were born in 1966, you are a horse and if in 1967, you are sheep etc. The year 2004 is the year of monkey. So the next year will be rooster. Please have a look at the chart at the bottom of this page, if you are curious as to what your sign is.
The items featured below are small wood carvings
representing kanji characters for those 12 animals. The wood used for the item
is called tsuge (boxwood) which is common material used for hanko stamps as
well. They all come with a little strap so that you can tie them to your car
keyes, mobile phones, purse or carry it around as a lucky charm.
