One of the great thrills of traveling in Japan for first-time visitors, non Japanese residents and Japanese alike, is coming across, suddenly and without warning, small local festivals. Although this is not as impossible as it may seem, especially if you are here at the right time of year (summer, autumn), you don't want to risk going back to your country without encountering any of them. Here is a list of major festivals so you don't have to rely solely on luck.
